Week 7 takeaways – Guards stun Surge, Vikings and Rhein Fire prevail

There was a lot going on in the European League of Football this week! But what are the takeaways?

Week 7 of the third European League of Football season is in the books. Clear-cut wins and thrilling fourth-quarter endings were all part of the past weekend. But what are the major takeaways after another week of the regular season is behind us?

Guards stun Surge and the rest of the league

What was that? The Helvetic Guards have stunned the Stuttgart Surge at home by winning against one of the three undefeated teams prior to Week 7. With a final score of 31-13, the Guards even won by a large margin. But how?

Turnovers were crucial for both teams. With four interceptions and two lost fumbles by German quarterback Jan Weinreich, the Surge had to fight against a negative turnover margin all game (-5). But the Guards were also able to move the ball offensively at times, which ran out the clock. The Surge were not even able to put up any points in the second half. Are the Surge crumbling or will they get back up to speed in Week 8?

Vikings and Rhein Fire stay undefeated

With the unexpected loss by the Stuttgart Surge, Rhein Fire and the Vienna Vikings are the only two teams that are still undefeated. But both teams faced some problems in Week 7 as well.

The Vikings were trailing the Wroclaw Panthers with 21 – 7 into the third quarter of the game early on Sunday. But the reigning champion was able to fight back into the game. Rhein Fire also struggled against the Paris Musketeers who were even able to pressure quarterback Jadrian Clark with three total sacks on the day.

In my opinion, there will be not team with a perfect record at the end of the regular season. Even Rhein Fire will probably stumble at least once.

Are the Thunder for real?

The Thunder are 5-2 and come of impressive back-to-back wins. But is that because of their great performance or because of the teams they play? Their 43-6 victory over the Prague Lions was a combination of both.

The Berlin Thunder turned over the ball numerous times themselves with three interceptions and two fumbles by quarterback Slade Jarman. But winning a game despite five turnovers tells a lot about the opponent as well. In my opinion, the Thunder have what it takes to reach the playoffs but will probably lose out in the wild card round if they are not able to clean up their sloppy playing style. So far, the Thunder were not able to put up a complete game in which they performed well in all four quarters.
