Vikings optimistic ahead of big capital duel against Berlin

The second Vienna Vikings home game of the current European League of Football season is just around the corner. On Saturday, June 15, head coach Chris Calaycay's team welcomes the Berlin Thunder to the Generali-Arena for a Saturday night showdown. The 'Salute To Service' Gameday is organized in cooperation with the Austrian Armed Forces and presents a high-power game.

Eastern Conference highlight

Football fans across Europe can look forward to a special sporting treat on Saturday at 6 PM. The Berlin Thunder (2-1) will host the Vienna Vikings (3-0). "The anticipation for this game is very high, not only among the fans but also the entire team. Previous encounters with the Berlin franchise have always been thrilling and exciting. We will bring our A-game and want to offer the thousands of visitors the best Vikings football," said Vikings HC Chris Calaycay, whose team is currently undergoing some personnel changes.

The Vienna team introduced a new addition yesterday: Quarterback Shelton Eppler will take over the playmaker position as long as the regular QB1 Ben Holmes is on the Injury Reserved List. The signing has also become necessary because the young Austrian quarterback Alex Reischl suffered a knee injury in the game against Wroclaw. The Salzburg playmaker is expected to be out for six to eight weeks.

New face in the Danube city

"Shelton Eppler is an outstanding quarterback with a lot of international experience. He is already practicing with our team and will help us get the 1-0 this week. I was impressed with who he is as a person and as a player. In our current situation, we definitely picked the right guy for the Vikings and to help us achieve our goals," said Chris Calaycay, who is pleased with another signing. Offensive lineman Michael Haider, who was already part of the 2022 Championship team, will strengthen the O-Line with immediate effect.

Statement Shelton: "First and foremost I’m very grateful for the opportunity to join a great organization with even better people in the beautiful city of Vienna. The city, team, and everyone has made me and my family very welcomed and I couldn’t ask for anything else. The culture here is admirable and I’m excited to get to work!"
