Vienna Vikings extend Gerner and Holub through 2026

The Vienna Vikings have extended 24-year old defensive back Leo Gerner for the next two seasons, ensuring one of their talented defensive backs will return to the field in purple. The young defensive back has been a part of the Vikings organization since 2020, helping the team win the ELF title in 2022. Last season he made 28 tackles while breaking up 6 passes and snagging one interception.

"Cohesion and brotherhood"

"I am incredibly excited to be part of the Vienna Vikings for the next two years. There is a reason why I can call this organization my home. The cohesion and brotherhood of the team - especially in the defensive backfield, has always been a big part of my motivation to play here. Therefore, the decision to extend with the Vikings was easy and I am excited to see what the future holds. I can't wait to build on last season's success and support the Vikings in every way I can as we chase a second title. I am convinced that the coming season will be entertaining for all the fans who cheer us on in the stadium and in front of their screens", says Leo Gerner.

Gerner is the latest Viking to return to the team after last year’s 13-1 run that fell just short in the Championship Game. The Vikings have already secured Ben Holmes, Lukas Holub, Noel Swancar, Karri Pajarinen, Noah Toure, Johannes Schütz, and Elmeri Laalo will all be back for 2025.

Coach Chris Calaycay also commented on Gerner’s return of the Vikings: "Leo is another Austrian National Team player that has been with us for the past 3 seasons. He is experienced and a veteran in our secondary. We love that another part of our Defensive Back is returning and staying for two more years."

"A European football powerhouse"

Offensive tackle Lukas Holub also extends his contract with the Vikings until 2026. "I know we lost out in the final, but that doesn't diminish our drive and hunger to win. We want to pick up exactly where we left off. We are a European football powerhouse and want to go into next year's season as title contenders," says Holub.

Despite his young age he is a key player in the Vikings offense, which Head Coach Chris Calaycay repeatedly emphasises: "Lukas has started almost every snap at right tackle since our franchise was founded. To say he is a cornerstone for the Vikings is an understatement. It is incredible to have him back for the next two seasons. Homegrown heroes like Lukas are the foundation for the long-term success as a franchise."
