The Prague Lions’ quiet rebuild begins to pay off
Felix Pahl

After a rocky start in the European League of Football in 2023, the Prague Lions are finally showing signs of real progress. With two wins already this season, the Lions have secured more victories than in any previous ELF season.
A smarter offseason approach
The Lions’ transformation didn’t happen overnight. After two tough seasons, the organization changed direction. Instead of bringing in completely new imports, they focused on experienced American players who already knew the ELF and had proven themselves.
Quarterback Javarian Smith (formerly Hamburg Sea Devils), playmaker William Patterson (Madrid Bravos & Rhein Fire), defensive back Ken Hike Jr. (Helvetic Mercenaries & Vienna Vikings), and the currently injured Ja’len Embry (Madrid Bravos) all joined the squad. These veterans brought stability, leadership, and production.
The Lions also targeted the offensive line — an area of concern in previous seasons — by adding E-imports with proven skills. This helped solidify protection for the offense and gave the team a more balanced structure.
On-field progress is clear
Even though Prague opened the season with two losses — first to the Vienna Vikings and then to the Hamburg Sea Devils — both games showed a more competitive, disciplined team. The homegrown talent continues to develop, giving the team much-needed depth and fight.
The turning point came in Week 3 and Week 4, where the Lions secured two strong victories. Most recently, they dominated the Wroclaw Panthers with an unpredictable game plan and well-executed football on both sides of the ball. It was a clear sign that the chemistry is building and the strategy is working.

Bye week brings both rest and risk
The Lions now enter their first bye week of the season. It’s a good opportunity to correct mistakes and recover physically, but it could also interrupt the team’s growing momentum. In Week 6, they’ll face the Hamburg Sea Devils once again — a chance for revenge and another test of how far they’ve come.
Whether the rebuild is complete or still in progress, one thing is clear: the Prague Lions are no longer the easy target they once were.
