The Nominees for Defensive Player of the Year

Not only is the final getting closer, but so are the ELF Honors, where players and coaches will be recognized for their performances during the regular season across 11 different categories.

This award is given to the best defensive player of the season. The winner has shown outstanding performance, leadership, and consistency, making key plays to stop the opposing team. Any defensive player is eligible to win this award.

Let’s take a look at the nominees for the Defensive Player of the Year award:

Thunder Defensive End – Kyle Kitchens:

What a season once again for Kyle Kitchens. The two-time Defensive Player of the Year winner has shown once again how dominant he is. Although his Berlin Thunder had a disappointing season overall, Kitchens' individual stats were still incredible. With 16.5 sacks, Kitchens broke his own sack record from 2022, setting a new benchmark, even though most teams were dedicating two offensive linemen to block him. His other stats are just as impressive, showing his dominance on the field. In addition to his 16.5 sacks, Kitchens recorded 25 tackles for loss, one interception, one pass breakup, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and one fumble return touchdown.

Panthers Linebacker – A.J. Wentland:

Like Kitchens, A.J. Wentland also set a new record this year. Wentland racked up 166 tackles for the Panthers, helping turn around a disappointing season towards the end. With his 166 tackles, Wentland broke his own record from 2022, once again making the most tackles in a regular season. As the leader of the defense, Wentland was outstanding, and his other stats were equally impressive. He recorded 4.5 sacks, 13.5 tackles for loss, one interception, five pass breakups, and four forced fumbles.

Mercenaries Linebacker – Jonathan Falk:

Jonathan Falk, in his final season in the European League of Football, showed once again what he’s capable of. Falk announced his retirement after the last regular season game. Although the Mercenaries finished the season 1-11, Falk was still one of the best defensive players in the league, as his stats clearly show. He recorded 146 tackles, 2 sacks, 11.5 tackles for loss, one interception, one pass breakup, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery, highlighting how dominant he was this season.

The winners will be announced on September 21 at the ELF Honors.
