Sunday recap: Ravens dominate Mercenaries, Panthers disappoint

These Sunday games showed a class difference on the field. While the Surge defeated the Panthers without allowing any points, the Ravens beat the Mercenaries.

Wroclaw Panthers (3-5) at Stuttgart Surge (7-0) 0-40

The Wroclaw Panthers' unexpectedly poor season continues. Despite a new head coach who used the bye week for extra preparation and to establish his plan, it was clear early on who would win. The Stuttgart Surge were simply too strong and excelled on both offense and defense. By halftime, the Surge were already leading 26-0. For Surge quarterback Reilly Hennessey, the half went as planned. He ran for two touchdowns himself and threw another to Louis Geyer in the end zone.

Despite the big lead, the Surge continued to give their best and extended their lead. Besides the strong offensive performance, the defense ensured the Panthers didn't score any points. The special teams also shined as Darrell Stewart Jr., returning from an injury last week, returned a Panthers punt for a touchdown, showing he is likely back at 100%. The Stuttgart Surge were too much for the Wroclaw Panthers. The Surge ended the game with nearly 400 total yards, while the Panthers managed only a disappointing 133 yards.

Due to the unplayability of the pitch after heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, the game between the Stuttgart Surge and the Panthers Wroclaw on Sunday was cancelled after a 30-minute interruption by order of the City of Stuttgart, the owner and operator of the „GAZI Stadium auf der Waldau", at the end of the third quarter with the score 40:0 in favour of the Surge. Both teams and the European League of Football agreed with this decision due to the increased risk of injury to players.

Next week, the Wroclaw Panthers will host the Fehérvár Enthroners, while the Stuttgart Surge will travel to Barcelona to play against the Barcelona Dragons.

Helvetic Mercenaries (1-7) at Munich Ravens (4-3) 23-55

The strong performance of the Mercenaries from the last two games couldn't be repeated. This was mainly due to the early injury of their quarterback Carlton Aiken Jr., who was replaced by wide receiver Anthony Brown. Brown managed to help the Mercenaries score a few times, but the team became too error-prone after losing their quarterback, allowing the Ravens to capitalize on turnovers. Running back Tomiwa Oyewo of the Munich Ravens was a key player, helping the Ravens march down the field and score. He excelled not only on the ground but also as a receiving target, catching two touchdowns.

Carlton Aiken Jr. briefly returned in the third quarter to throw a touchdown but was then replaced again by his wide receiver. Despite this touchdown, the Ravens remained in control, scoring several more touchdowns. Their quarterback Chad Jeffries threw for an impressive 374 yards and 5 touchdowns, leading the Ravens to a dominant 55-23 victory.

After their seventh loss of the season, the Helvetic Mercenaries will travel to face the Raiders Tirol in Week 10, while the Munich Ravens will have another home game against the Milano Seamen.
