Saturday Recap: Incredible start to the 2023 season

There were four top games that the spectators could watch on Saturday afternoon at the start of the season.

First, the highly acclaimed Paris Musketeers visited the underdog Cologne Centurions and the Fehérvár Enthroners welcomed Berlin Thunder, a hot candidate for the playoffs. A little later the kick-off in the rivalry between the Hamburg Sea Devils and Wroclaw Panthers took place and Barcelona hosted the Guards in the Spanish evening sun.

Statement in Hungary

While the Paris Musketeers and Cologne Centurions were mainly characterized by defensive performances in the first half, Berlin Thunder delivered a true firework display both offensively and defensively. The connection between quarterback Donovan Isom and wide receiver Aaron Jackson clicked from the first minute from the German capital team. Defensive player Ludvig Myren and two-time Defensive Player of the Year Kyle Kitchens provided scores on the defensive side. Quarterback Jerod Evans of the Fehérvár Enthroners was unable to hold his own against a stout Thunder defense. A 36-3 statement win for Johnny Schmuck's team.

Nail-biter in Cologne

Meanwhile, the Centurions and Musketeers were also able to increase their output. Both Dylan Jacob and Zach Edwards flourished. In a thrilling finish, the Musketeers prevailed just before the end of the game through that same Edwards, and a final push by the Centurions fizzled out with the clock running out to make it 24-17 for the Musketeers.

Panthers prevail

Meanwhile, it was a similar story for the Sea Devils. A too-strong Panthers offense and many penalties prevented a final surge by the Hamburg team in Wroclaw. Quarterback Matthew Vitale and wide receiver Toni Tate were the salvation for the offense. Defensively they got to the opposing quarterback Preston Haire again and again, provided big plays for enough distance. Charles Jones' squad was unable to close the gap from the second half on, losing 25-34 to strong Panthers.

Underdog mentality

Gabriel Sánchez's team was able to put an exclamation mark directly in Barcelona. As the widely dealt underdog, the Dragons showed a solid performance both offensively and defensively, holding the opposing offense to a total of 17 points with Silas Nacita and Collin Hill. The Dragons once again start the season with a win. The role as underdog seems to suit the Dragons year after year. Guards' Head Coach Norm Chow can't be satisfied with the 17-29 loss.

More highlights are expected on Sunday when the Raiders travel to Munich, the Galaxy play against rival Rhein Fire and newcomer Prague Lions host the Leipzig Kings. New attendance records are expected. You can be there live with the Gamepass or on site with Ticketmaster.
