Road to Duisburg - Rhein Fire

The Rhein Fire matched the off season hype and made it all the way to the Championship Game, which will take place at their home stadium. Here is how their season went:

Undefeated regular season

The Rhein Fire started their way to the top right away in Week 1, beating their biggest rival, the Frankfurt Galaxy, 33-9. After winning their closest game of the season, against the Hamburg Sea Devils in front of 32,500 at the Volksparkstadion, with 27-22, the Rhein Fire played a season of dominance unlike anything ever seen in Europe. Jim Tomsula’s team decimated every opponent they faced by double digits, ending the regular season as the (together with the Vikings) first ever undefeated team in European League of Football history, while setting multiple team- and individual records.

Defeating the biggest rival

After their first-week bye, the Rhein Fire was set to host their hated rival Frankfurt Galaxy for a third matchup this season. After a sloppy first half, the team turned it around after the halftime, playing much more concentrated and efficient. Rhein Fire went on to outscore the Galaxy 28-7 in the second half and win the game 42-23 to secure their spot in the Championship Game.

Coronation at home?

The Rhein Fire now have the chance to crown themselves champions at their home stadium on Sunday and become the first team in ELF and NFL Europe history to play a perfect season. Standing in their way is the biggest Cinderella story in European League of Football history: The Stuttgart Surge, who just eliminated the reigning champions Vienna Vikings. Can Rhein Fire fulfill their destiny and make history, or will the underdogs prevail and achieve the ultimate feel good story?
