The Vienna Vikings have extended their contract with their next defensive player. Linebacker Jan-Phillip Bombek will stay in Austria's capital for another year.

Bombek is mainly used as an edge rusher and impresses the fans and Vikings Head Coach Chris Calaycay in particular: "Jan is just a monster on the edge of our defense." Defensive coordinator Daniel Auböck is also enthusiastic about his player: "JP is a player offensive coordinators refer to as ‘a problem’. He is one of the premiere passrushers in Europe. Offenses need to account for him at all times, as he has the ability to beat any OT on any given play. We trust JP to get to the QB with the game on the line."

The 28-year-old is already facing his fifth season in the European League of Football. He made his debut for the Hamburg Sea Devils in 2021. Later, Bombek played for the Leipzig Kings. Since 2024, he has been part of the Vienna Vikings.

Bombek has already participated in a total of 42 ELF games, 29 of which he began as a starter. He made 84 tackles, including 36 for loss and 28.5 sacks. In addition, he had three pass deflections, four forced fumbles and two recovered fumbles. In 2022 Bombek was selected to the ELF second All-Star team.

Bombek joins numerous defensive signings in Vienna. Previously, the Viennese have already announced Leo Misangumukini, Marvin Wappl, Thomas Schaffer, Oskar Kranich, Manuel Radfux, Fabian Schmid, Florian Sudi as well as Florian and Max Grünsteidl. While he narrowly missed out on the championship in the final with the Vikings in 2024, the team wants to attack hard in the upcoming season. Jan-Phillip Bombek can also continue to contribute to this.
