“I'm sure that will drive its popularity” - Joe Thomas on how to boost Football in Europe
NFL Hall-of-Famer Joe Thomas has left the Munich Ravens and is returning to the USA. The sport is an integral part of the US-culture. The sport also enjoys great popularity in Europe - and the trend is rising. Nevertheless, Thomas sees some measures that can be implemented to boost its popularity even more.
"The most important thing would be to get more young children interested in football," he explains in an interview with ‘Munich Ravens Media’. "In the USA, kids start at an early age. When young people play the sport, they become lifelong fans. They may dream of playing for the Munich Ravens one day, and even if that dream doesn't come true, they will support the team as fans for life," he continues.
The earlier children start playing, the better, he believes: "In the USA, football is part of the culture from an early age. Children start playing in fifth grade, and it becomes part of their identity. That needs to happen here in Europe too."
According to Thomas, one way to increase popularity is by playing flag football. "Flag football allows boys and girls and people of all ages to experience the sport, and once they do, they get excited."
However, Thomas also reminds others to be patient: "It is also important to give the sport time to grow so that it can become part of the culture. The more people see it on their social media or on TV, the more enthusiasm it will generate."
Overall, the former NFL star is optimistic: "Football teaches valuable life lessons, such as overcoming adversity, focusing on something bigger than yourself and working as a team. It's a sport that inspires lifelong passion, and I'm sure that will drive its popularity in Europe."
Joe Thomas played eleven years for the Cleveland Browns in the NFL. In addition to several awards, he was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2023. In 2024, the Munich Ravens introduced him as offensive line coach and brand ambassador.
