The Cologne Centurions have made a big move to strengthen their defense by signing Dutch cornerback Richard Agyekum. The talented defensive back brings experience from both college football in the United States and international competition in Europe.
A talented and experienced defensive back
Agyekum has played at a high level in both the NCAA and European competitions. He started his college career at North Dakota, where he played in 12 games and recorded eight tackles. In 2021, he appeared in two games and made one tackle in a 34-10 win over Western Illinois. By 2023, Agyekum had moved to the Minnesota State Mavericks, playing in all 12 games, recording 17 tackles, breaking up three passes, and forcing a fumble. His consistent performances show his ability to contribute on the field.
A strong football background
Before his college career, Agyekum was already recognized as one of the best defensive back prospects in Europe. He was rated as a 3-star recruit by 247Sports and received multiple Power 5 scholarship offers. In 2019, he represented the Netherlands at the U-19 European Championships, proving his talent on an international level. As a high school player, he was not only strong on defense — where he recorded two interceptions and forced two fumbles — but also a dangerous offensive threat, gaining over 800 yards and scoring 13 touchdowns in one season.
A return to Cologne
For Agyekum, joining the Centurions is more than just a new opportunity — it’s a return to a place he knows well. "Playing for the Centurions means being part of something special — a young team with incredible potential and a future that’s just getting started. Having been in Cologne before, I know firsthand how unbelievable the support from the community is, and I’m excited to experience it again! Thank you, Coach Jay, for this opportunity!"
With Agyekum’s speed, experience, and playmaking ability, the Centurions are adding a strong piece to their defense as they prepare for the new season. Fans in Cologne can look forward to seeing him make an impact on the field once again.
