Cologne Centurions' look back on an average 2024 season

If you have to describe the Cologne Centurions' 2024 season, one word quickly comes to mind: average. The German team won six of their games. At the same time, however, they lost another six. This puts them forth out of six teams in the Western Conference.

And things don't look too bad for the Centurions offensively. The team is ranked ninth in the league's offensive rankings. They are particularly strong on third down attempts. Over 50 percent end in a new 1st down. League best.

Quarterback Isaiah Weed is also showing good promise as a dual-threat quarterback. The mobile signal caller led his team in both passing and rushing yards. He achieved 2553 passing yards and 17 passing touchdowns. He also got 702 and eight touchdowns on the ground. However, the 27-year-old still needs to work on his accuracy (61.7 percent) and concentration (14 interceptions and two fumbles).

O-line with potential - special teams to perform

But Weed is well protected. The Centurions allow the seventh-fewest sacks. They also rank tenth in rushing yards. Of course, quarterback Weed's mobility also plays a role. Still, the offensive line has potential.

The special teams also worked. The Centurions gained the most kickoff return yards last season. The unit around wide receiver Carlos Hill can therefore be proud. Although kicker Jens Appelt can improve his accuracy of 64 percent in terms of points after touchdown, he is ice-cold when it comes to field goals. A total of twelve of his 13 field goal attempts ended in points last season.

Defense gave their offense no chance

But the Centurions will have to improve significantly in defense. With 444 points, they allowed the third most in the ELF. With 5172 total yards, they even allowed the second most. They are particularly weak against the run and are only 16th in the league ranking.

In addition, Cologne allowed themselves far more turnovers than they generated. The defense was able to force seven interceptions and ten fumbles. On the other hand, the offense had to accept 14 interceptions and 15 fumbles.

Even with a decent offense and a good special teams, it is very difficult to win games in this shape.

The Cologne Centurions can look back on a mixed season. If the coaches manage to bring consistency to the defense over the offseason, the team can take the next step ahead of next season.
