Another piece of the Purple Reign Defense! Misangumukini stays a Viking
The Vienna Vikings are keeping another part of their Purple Reign Defense. Outside linebacker Leonel Misangumukini has signed a new two-year contract.
"We are happy that Leo extended his contract with us,“ says Vikings Head Coach Chris Calaycay. He adds: "Leo has all the tools to be a dominate pass rusher in the European Legau of Football. He was playing incredible football for us down the stretch. Towards the end of the 2024 season, he suffered an injury but will be back in full force in 2025.“
Calaycay already knows Misangumukini from 2018, when the 27-year-old was still playing wide receiver. Due to his strong athleticism, the Vikings quickly converted him into an outside linebacker.
With success. Misangumukini played well and even caught the attention of scouts from the NFL's International Player Pathway Program. He even took part in it in 2021 and 2022. However, a move to the NFL did not work out. Instead, Misangumukini went to the Dresden Monarchs in 2023.
In the middle of the 2023 ELF season, he then returned to his hometown of Vienna to play for the Vikings. Since then, he has collected 24 tackles, including 10.5 for loss, 5.5 sacks and a fumble recovery in 12 games.
Happily for the Vikings, who have now agreed to sign him for another two years. Misangumukini is also happy: “I'm looking forward to the coming season and can hardly wait to play football in front of my family and fans again.”
The defensive player joins numerous contract extensions. The Vikings will therefore also have some familiar faces next season.
