Vienna Vikings secure three homegrown Cornerbacks in Gerner, Huszar and Jobst
The Vienna Vikings added yet another three defensive backs. With Leo Gerner, Nikolaus Huszar and Florian Jobst three homegrown players made the European League of Football roster.
If there is one position group that is set, it will probably be the defensive backs for the Vienna Vikings. Leo Gerner, Nikolaus Huszar and Florian Jobst, all cornerbacks, are the next players the Vienna Vikings signed for the upcoming European League of Football season.
"I want to be part of something big. And what is being built here at the Vikings in Vienna is something very special. You can see that the whole organization takes good care of the players and offers us the best opportunities to prepare perfectly for this league." explained Leo Gerner about his signing with the Vikings and added: "The league offers many players a stage to show their skills and prove themselves. Previously, the leagues were always nationally limited, but in the European League of Football different countries and cultures meet to live out their passion in football together and against each other."
Already signed defensive backs: Exavier Edwards, Luis Horvath, Florian Albrecht, Christoph Kellner, Benjamin Straight
His former teammate and teammate in the Vikings European League of Football squad Nikolaus Huszar is opmistic, as well. "I've played for the Vikings my whole football life and I want to take this next step for my team on the European stage. I hope that the Football League will take the next big step in Europe and bring the sport the attention it deserves."
Florian Jobst, who played in the highest German division the last year is happy about his new challenge. "I decided to take the chance to play in the European League of Football, because in my opinion there is no more competitive and professional league in Europe at the moment. It is a dream come true for me to expand my horizons as a player in such a professional league at the international level." said Florian. Both Gerner and Jobst grew up in Upper Austria, where Kirchdorf, on the German border to Austria, had the nearest football club. Still living in Austria, both managed to start a successfull career.
"Development of young players has always been at the heart of the Vikings organization. These young defensive backs have proven in the Austrian football league to be some of the top CBs, also for our National team, and they are just getting started. I’m excited to add Florian to the DB crew and to see the next step for the red heads in 2022 and the competition in the European League of Football!" said head coach Chris Calaycay about his youngsters, jokingly talking about the nickname "Ginger Island" for Niko Huszar and and Leo Gerner.
