Vienna Vikings re-sign wide receiver Weston Carr
The former Penn State Nittany Lion will take the field for the reigning champions in 2023.
Weston Carr, former All-American and Cotton Bowl Champion, will return to the Vienna Vikings in 2022.
Despite being team MVP and an All-Conference selection, Carr was not highly recruited out of high school. The two-sport athlete, who also ran track committed to Division II Azusa Pacific, staying in his home state of California. After redshirting his freshman season played a crucial in the Cougar’s first ever playoff berth, by leading the team in every receiving category with 48 receptions for 905 yards and nine touchdowns.
As a sophomore Carr played one best seasons in program history. His 1.458 receiving yards set a new single-season record for Azusa Pacific, which still stands to this day. Besides his record-breaking receiving yards, the wideout also caught 86 passes for 15 touchdowns. His outstanding performance gained him an AP Division II First-Team All-American spot.
In his junior season, Carr was part of a successful wide receiver trio, which is the reason why his production shrunk. In 12 games the California native caught 33 passes for 644 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Weston Carr left Azusa Pacific after his junior season and joined James Franklin’s Penn State Nittany Lions as a graduate transfer. The former Cougar is one of the schools greatest players ever and still holds the program’s all-time records for career receiving yards with 3005 and touchdowns with 36.
During his senior season at Penn State the Division II standout appeared in three games catching three passes for 27 yards and won the Cotton Bowl.
After graduating, the American joined the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes in the GFL. Carr played an outstanding season with 62 receptions for 1318 yards and 15 touchdowns and was deservingly named to the All-Star team.
The Vienna Vikings signed Weston Carr before the start of the 2022 European League of Football season import looked like a homerun in pre-season practices, before suffering a season-ending knee injury in the scrimmage against the Leipzig Kings.
The wideout has high hopes for next season:
"I resigned with the Vikings because nothing beats their culture and brotherhood. My expectations for next year is back to back champions.“
Vikings head coach Chris Calaycay has nothing but praise for his pass catcher:
"Weston’s season was cut short in the preseason due to an injury but being fully healthy, he returns to Europe and has a chance to show the European League of Football why he was so dominant in 2021. We are excited for Weston to be back on the field. And we are excited for the fans to see what he can do in Purple in 2023.“
The former All-American could potentially be one of the best pass catchers in the European League of Footballnext season
