Berlin Thunder sign US-quarterback Donovan Isom
Berlin Thunder have secured a big-body quarterback in Donovon Isom, who comes from the Berlin Rebels.
Quarterback position newly filled! Berlin Thunder brings in Donovan Isom for the position of quarterback for the upcoming season. With 1.94 m and almost 118 kg, he is directly also one of the largest and heaviest quarterbacks in the European League of Football. The 28-year-old began his football career in 2010 at Destrehan High School in Louisiana, USA.
After one year at the University of Utah (NCAA Division I), Isom transferred to Southeastern Louisiana University, who are based in the NCAA Division 1 FCS. Here he played for three seasons. The quarterback spent the final two years of his college career at Texas Wesleyan University (NAIA). With no football seasons in general in 2020, Isom decided to move to Europe and play for the Berlin Rebels in the GFL. The U.S. native will now find his new home with the Berlin Thunder in the European League of Football. Isom replaces Germinerio at the quarterback position, who announced his retirement in previous weeks.
Johnny Schmuck, head coach: "With Donovan, we have found the most suitable quarterback for us right on our doorstep. He played his way onto the recruiting board of many top European clubs last year. I'm glad he sees his future with us as well. Donovan is a big-body QB who also brings very good scrambling skills. However, his arm talent coupled with his outstanding character set him apart from other candidates for us. He's the right guy to set the stage for our receivers, and I'm confident we'll get a lot of enjoyment out of him and his style of play."
In the GFL last year, Isom amassed 2686 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns, four interceptions and an additional 10 rushing touchdowns in ten games. Isom is tough to bring down as a quarterback and showed off his arm talent last season, earning a passer rating of 121. His physicality in short-yardage situations in particular is a weapon Berlin Thunder could use. He definitely has weapons in Robin Wilzeck, Nicolai Schumann, Max Zimmermann and Aaron Jackson.
Donovan Isom: "I am very excited to be a part of Berlin Thunder. We have great coaches, players and staff in the organization, and I am already looking forward to continuing to improve. Berlin is a special place for me, and I am thankful to be able to call this city 'home'!
