Power Ranking: Musketeers rise, Lions plummet

A power ranking has each team ranked according to their current strength. After Week 8, the European League of Football starts to take shape when it comes to playoff spots. Who slides down and who moves up?

Let’s see where I rank each team going into Week 9 of the 2024 season and why!

Previous Ranking: 1

The Surge made their game against the Raiders Tirol closer than it needed to be. But three turnovers for Raiders quarterback N’Kosi Perry were just the neck-breaker for the Austrian franchise. Despite their struggles against the Raiders, the Surge stay at number one because they played a top-team in Week 8 and still got the win.

Previous Ranking: 2

Compared to the Surge, Rhein Fire played a rather easy opponent. The Hamburg Sea Devils were more than overwhelmed by the offensive and defensive firepower of the Rhein Fire. Glen Toonga rushed for over 200 yards and three touchdowns in the first quarter alone. Will we see a championship rematch in 2024?

Previous Ranking: 4

The Paris Musketeers crack the Top 3 for the first time in my power ranking this season, rightfully so. After a dominant first half against the Berlin Thunder with a score of 28-0, the French franchise fell off a bit and made the final score closer than it had to be. Once they manage to play like the first two quarters for an entire game, they will be difficult to stop for any opponent in this league.

Previous Ranking: 3

The Vienna Vikings have to slide down another spot in my ranking because of their shaky performance against the Vikings. It seemed like they have everything under control in this shootout. But letting the Mercenaries score 40 points against you says something. Let’s see if they can figure things out against the Thunder on the road in Week 9.

Previous Ranking: 5

The Madrid Bravos stay where they are after a blowout against the Barcelona Dragons.

Previous Rank: 6

The Raiders Tirol made it tough on themselves once again. They were so close to beating the Vikings and the Surge in back-to-back weeks, but their quarterback N’Kosi Perry, who does a great job moving the chains, threw for a combined six interceptions in the last two games. If the Raiders are able to eliminate the turnovers, they are a team to be reckoned with.

Previous Rank: 7

The Munich Ravens enjoyed a bye week in Week 8. For now, they stay where they are.

Previous Rank: 8

The Berlin Thunder almost managed to came back against the Paris Musketeers on the road. But after a 28-0 start, it was more than tough to come back into the game. The Thunder stay at eight for now, but if they want to turn things around, players like wide receiver Robin Wilzeck or their homegrowns running backs need to be healthy and play a contributing factor.

Previous Rank: 11

The Centurions did the impossible. They finally broke the losing-streak against their arch-rival, the Frankfurt Galaxy. They are now 1-7 all-time in games against the Galaxy. This win catapults them into the Top 10 for the first time this season.

Previous Rank: 10

The Wroclaw Panthers enjoyed a bye week in Week 8. For now, they stay where they are.

Previous Rank: 9

The Frankfurt Galaxy lost against a team they have never lost against before: the Cologne Centurions. Because of that, they have to switch spots with them in my ranking and therefore drop out of my Top 10 for the first time this season. And if things could not go any worse, they have to play the Rhein Fire on the road in Week 9.

Previous Rank: 15

The Helvetic Mercenaries made a name for themselves in Week 8 by almost upsetting the Vienna Vikings. Just because of that, the Mercenaries have to jump up the ranking all the way to twelve. Let’s see if the Swiss franchise can keep up the momentum against the Munich Ravens in Week 9.

Previous Rank: 12

Another brutal loss by the Hamburg Sea Devils. This team is just not what it was in 2021 and 2022. However, former Raiders quarterback D’Angelo Fulford provided the Hanseatic franchise with a spark against the Rhein Fire despite their loss. Let’s see what they can do against the up-and-coming Cologne Centurions in Week 9.

Previous Rank: 14

What a game by the Enthroners against the Prague Lions! It was great to see former Rhein Fire star Nathaniel Robitaille getting his share of touchdowns. However, this win came against the Prague Lions which rank in the bottom three. The Enthroners won their first game of the season, yes, but I still have a tough time moving them up the board.

Previous Rank: 14

The Milano Seamen enjoyed a bye week in Week 8. For now, they stay where they are.

Previous Rank: 13

The Prague Loins fall three spots after their brutal loss against the Enthroners. They now have a bye week to reassess their gameplan for their Week 10 matchup against the Vikings.

Previous Rank: 17

The Barcelona Dragons got shut out again. But just as the Loins, they now have a bye week to reassess their gameplan for their Week 10 opponent.
