Raymond Woodard becomes new defensive coordinator of the Hamburg Sea Devils
The Hamburg Sea Devils have signed Raymond Woodard as their new defensive coordinator. "I am very excited for this opportunity. I am looking forward to this season and doing my part to help bring a championship home to Hamburg!“, says the 63-years-old.
The US-American started his European journey back in 1997, when he joined Frankfurt Galaxy in the NFL Europe as defensive coordinator. This was followed in 1999 by three years as defensive coordinator with the Scottish Claymores, also in NFL Europe.
Woodard then moved back home. In 2007, he took up the position of head coach at Navarro Junior College, Corsicana, Texas. And he was quite successful. His team was crowned conference champion and finished the season as the fourth-best team in the USA.
In 2008, Woodard took over as head coach at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. He led the NCAA Division I college for eight years. In 2024, he made his coaching comeback - in the European League of Football. The experienced coach became defensive coordinator of the Madrid Bravos.
Woodard can therefore rely on his significant experience as a coach. He also has a great understanding of the defensive game. After all, he played as a defensive tackle at the University of Texas.
The Texans had the best defense in the country at the time, so Woodard was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 1984. He made the leap to the NFL. In addition to the Chargers, he also played for the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs. However, Woodard only played nine NFL games.
The Hamburg Sea Devils have therefore hired an experienced coach to bring new brilliance to the Sea Devils defense.
