Stuttgart Surge on the rise: Nick Wenzelburger extends contract

Nick Wenzelburger made the leap into the biggest league of European football and now will take his experience into another season! The All Star is back!

The All Star returns! Nick Wenzelburger made himself a name as one of the most versatile homegrown defensive backs of the league. At 1,84 m and 80 kg, he is shifty enough to make impact plays for the Surge and defensive coordinator Andy Meyer. Stuttgart Surge has been able to keep a courted youngster for the new season. The safety wants to continue the strong preseason in his home country.

"I'm already looking forward to playing for Stuttgart Surge in 2022. As a Stuttgart boy, it's an honor for me to represent my city internationally," he says, adding, "coming off a 2-8 season, it's hard to say we want to go to Klagenfurt. But still, the goal is playoffs. We will give everything for that!"

"Outstanding performances on the field"

The 22-year-old started playing football with the Stuttgart Scorpions in 2011. There he went through the youth teams very successfully. In 2018, he celebrated the Scorpions' first southern title in ten years in the GFL Juniors. However, he narrowly missed out on reaching the final in his home stadium on the Waldau. Now he is taking his experience back to the European League of Football and therefore the biggest stage.

Surge All-Stars in place

"Nick not only impresses with his outstanding performances on the field, but is also an exceptionally great person and character. Any team is lucky to have a leader like that with them. With Nick, we are strengthening our young defensive backfield tremendously. With his commitment, we have provided stability here and our defense is also looking forward to continuing to work with Nick," explains Surge Head Coach Martin Hanselmann.

Continuity and additions

38 overall tackles, two tackles for loss, one interception and four passes defended underline his value as a defensive back for the Surge. With some additions and the comeback of core-players, the Surge could make a huge step into the right direction. Benjamin Barnes, Julian Ludwig-Mayorga and Wenzelburger could all fight for a starting spot.
