Not all is bad in Frankfurt - Galaxy looks back on a difficult season

Frankfurt Galaxy have to look back on a disappointing season. As in 2023, the first ELF champions in history clearly missed the playoffs. With a record of 4-8, they even finish second last in the Western Conference.

A difficult year in which the Frankfurt team mainly lacked consistency. Two defeats at the start of the season were followed by two wins. An up and down that continued throughout the season.

Frankfurt was also affected by injuries. Two starting quarterbacks, Luke Zahradka (week 8) and Matthew McKay (week 13), were injured during the season. Backup Moritz Maack repeatedly had to step up.

Offense on track - defense with weaknesses

Nevertheless, the offense got rolling again and again. Galaxy was the third-best team in passing yards. 3044 yards were collected by the quarterbacks and their teammates. Finally, the coaching team acted bravely and called eleven trick plays in which receivers and running backs threw the ball. Including a 54 yard pass from receiver Markell Castle. In addition, there was a solid running game, which is statistically in the midfield of the ELF. The team was therefore able to collect enough yards. However, Galaxy had problems converting their gained yardage into points. With 285 points, they finished in the bottom third of the league.

A problem, when you keep in mind, that the defense usually allowed significantly more points than the offense was able to score. The team conceded a total of 4763 yards on the ground and through the air - the fifth-weakest performance in the ELF. Galaxy have to improve against the pass in particular. They allowed the fourth most passing yards in the league.

What the defense can do, however, is to force turnovers. Eight fumbles and six interceptions are in the books. Sadly, the offense also lost 23 balls.

Special teams delivered

But the Galaxy can rely on its special team. Paul Kavadia-Lenhardt returned punts for an average of 13 yards and kickoffs for an average of 22.6 yards. His teammate Niko Lester averaged 24.1 yards on kickoff returns.

Kicker Ryan Rimmler converted almost 70 percent of his field goals and even 90 percent of his points after touchdowns. Punter Hendrij Schwarz kicked the football for an average of 35.8 yards.

Not all is bad in Frankfurt

If you only look at the results, Frankfurt Galaxy cannot be satisfied with this season. If you look one level deeper, however, not everything went badly. If the coaching team manages to bring more consistency back into the team, make the offense more efficient, eliminate turnover and strengthen the defense, nothing stands in the way of new successes for the Galaxy.

An exciting offseason awaits the Galaxy. Long-term coach Thomas Kösling is moving to the position of Sport Director, freeing the way for a new coaching team.
