Top Signings of the Week – Vikings extend Swiss Army Knife and more

Do you wonder what players were the real steals this past week? Then this is just the right place for you!

The European League of Football heads towards its third season. All 18 franchises are looking for the best players available in Europe and from around the world. But what franchise won this past week with its mind-blowing signings?

Raiders Tirol create proven QB-WR duo

Over the last week, the Raiders Tirol announced their starting quarterback for the 2023 season. After the retirement of long-time Raiders quarterback Sean Shelton, the Raiders have signed Canadian passer Christian Strong to their roster.

Strong himself is a great pocket passer who can also be dangerous on the run to keep defenses on their toes. But what makes this signing even more special is his great relationship with American wide receiver Jarvis McClam.

Together, the QB-WR duo suited up for the Cologne Crocodiles in 2022 and put up incredible numbers. Both players statistically ended up at the top of their position group.

Strong passed for 3370 yards and 37 touchdowns compared to only six interceptions with the Crocodiles in 2022. Almost 1000 of those passing yards went straight to McClam who also recorded 177 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

Look out for this duo to rely on their chemistry early which should give the Raiders an advantage at the start of the season compared to other QB-WR duos around the league.

Stuttgart Surge extend big-play wide receiver

The Stuttgart Surge re-signed local players Paul Steigerwald over the course of last week. This signing may not be as splashy as others but is nonetheless a great sign for the Surge.

Steigerwald appeared in all of the twelve games last season and recorded 41 receptions for 480 yards and three touchdowns. This might not seem as much, but he actually led the Surge in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns despite poor quarterback throughout the entire season.

With Reilly Hennessey under center in 2023, Steigerwald should heavily profit from a consistent quarterback play. However, Hennessey should also profit from the 198cm tall and 98kg heavy wideout in crucial moments.

Hamburg Sea Devils re-sign talented defensive tackle

Another German player lands in my top signings of last week. Hiswill Awuah might not be a player all European League of Football fans are familiar with, but his impact on the field and on his team are worth mentioning.

The 22-year-old defensive tackle provides the Sea Devils with much needed talent at the interior defensive line. Awuah holds his own on the field and is able to move opposing offensive lineman with his 130kg.

In 2022, the German defensive lineman only appeared in seven of twelve regular season games but nevertheless recorded three-and-a-half sacks, two tackles for loss and 20 total tackles. He also recorded two fumbles for the Sea Devils defense. Look out for the youngster in 2023, when he could make another jump production-wise.

Reigning champions keep Swiss Army Knife in Vienna

The Vienna Vikings do it again and again. After winning the 2022 European League of Football Championship in Klagenfurt, the Vikings keep bringing back their best players week in and week out.

This past week, Swiss Army Knife Exavier Edwards returns to the Austrian franchise for another season.

The ultra-athletic player appeared in eleven out of twelve games and recorded 45 total tackles, two interceptions and six pass breakups as a defensive back. On offense, Edwards rushed for 113 yards and five touchdowns on the ground just in the regular season.

Edwards even returned twelve punts and ten kickoffs for the Vikings back in 2022 for a total of 561 return yards. If you talk a about playmakers and versatility in the European League of Football, don’t leave out the name Exavier Edwards at any circumstance!
