Vienna Vikings sign All-Star WR Yannik Mayr

The Vienna Vikings have added another weapon for quarterback Ben Holmes, this time signing All-Star Austrian wide receiver Yannik Mayr. Mayr on his decision to play for the Vikings in 2025. 

"I have followed the Vikings closely over the past few seasons. The 'final - semi-final - final' record obviously speaks for itself and shows what the franchise has achieved in Vienna and how successfully they operate here with great conditions and top coaching. The The quality of the homegrown players in Vienna, most of whom I know and can call many of my friends, is incredible. I'm really looking forward to the new season as a Viking and can't wait to get back to Vienna and play for a championship compete."

Familiar football roots in Vienna

Mayr, 28, played for the Vienna Vikings in the Austrian Football League for four seasons from 2017-2020. In 2019, Mayr caught 30 passes for 571 yards and seven touchdowns, while also adding three touchdowns on the ground. During the pandemic-shortened three game series with the Graz Giants in 2020, Mayr was the focal point of Vienna’s offense finishing with 291 yards and five touchdowns in three games.

Head Coach Chris Calaycay commented on Mayr's return to Vienna:

"We are so happy to welcome Yannick to Vienna. It is not just his extreme talent, but he is one of those guys that everyone loves to be around. As a football player the first thing that you think of with Yannick is Speed. Every team is looking for it and he is one of the fastest players in the ELF.  So getting one of the top home grown talents to Vienna is a huge addition to our offense and team." 

International career

Since then the Austrian National team standout has established himself as a European receiver playing for the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns in 2021, before joining the ELF as a member of the Raiders Tirol in 2022, catching 5 touchdowns and racking up 385 yards.

Standout on the Stuttgart Surge

For the past two seasons Mayr has been a pivotal part of the Stuttgart Surge’s offense putting up 92 catches for 1,581 yards and 13 touchdowns. Mayr earned All-Star honors in 2023 racking up 770 yards receiving and 5 scores. 

However, this past season was perhaps his best as he had over 1,303 all-purpose yards and 11 total touchdowns including two kick return scores. Over in his ELF career Mayr has had 19 touchdowns, 133 receptions und 2,069 recieving yards.
