Turnaround Candidates for 2023
Dominik Krauss
Seven weeks into the 2023 season, fans know what they can expect from most teams. But even after half a season there are some teams that are just starting to reach their full potential. These are the top three teams to keep an eye on.
Helvetic Guards
The Helvetic Guards have found their groove. After a 0-5 start, the Swiss franchise finally brought in a quarterback and turned their season around in the blink of an eye. After a double overtime victory against the Barcelona Dragons and the upset of the year against the Stuttgart Surge, a win against the Milano Seamen seems to be more than likely. Will the Guards end the season on a positive record? Looking at their remaining schedule of games against the Ravens, Raiders, Rhein Fire and Surge, the answer is probably no. But the Guards could still end the season ranked #4 in the toughest Conference in the league and have strong showings over the next few weeks, ending the season as a top three expansion franchise.
Paris Musketeers
Sitting at 2-5 at the bottom of the Western Conference, it is safe to say that the Paris Musketeers have not fulfilled the lofty expectations for their European League of Football debut season. But you have to keep in mind that every loss came against teams that would be in the playoffs if the season ended today. Both losses against the Surge were very close and the Musketeers could have easily won those games if they were able to turn their offensive production into some more points. Things are definitely trending upwards, as they showed a very strong performance against the arguably best team in the league last week. Even though the playoffs are most likely out of reach for the French team, don’t be surprised if they start a late run and win four out of their last five games to end the season 6-6.
Munich Ravens
The Munich Ravens are the best team without a winning record. Standing at 3-3, the Ravens have lost two of their three games due to getting outscored in the third quarter in games that were balanced up to that point. They played well against Rhein Fire and the Surge and have been playing really well over the past five weeks. If they are able to be more focused in the third quarter, it would not be surprising if they ended the season with an 8-4 record, which could be enough to sneak into the playoffs. So don’t the Ravens out just yet.
