Top 100 Players of 2023, Nos. 20 - 11: Best running back and more

The Top 100 Players of 2023 will be reveiled more and more every two days in the month of November. We will be releasing the Top 100 graded players of the season 2023 according to SportsMetrics. The grades reflect the individuals performance on the field.

Tim Hänni proved once again that he is one of the best interior defensive lineman in all of Europe. After a dominant 2022 season, the Hännimal returned to his native country of Switzerland, where he kept on raising havoc among offensive lines. With 47 tackles, 13.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, the Swiss was selected as a second-team All-Star.

Coming in one spot behind Hänni is his teammate. JR Tavai has been dominating all over the place in 2023. The former USC Trojan and Tennessee Titan has been a difference maker for the Helvetic Guards, recording 61 tackles, 12.5 TFL, six sacks, three pass breakups, four forced fumbles and a fumble recovery touchdown.

Niklas Gustav has been a top-five edge rusher ever since joining the European League of Football in 2022. After a First-Team All-Star season with 10 sacks and 15 tackles for loss last year, Gustav took another step, racking up 10.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss along with three forced fumbles this season. The German standout was once again selected as a First-Team All-Star in 2023.

Solomon Brown turned into a star player for the Wrocław Panthers in 2023. The two-time FCS All-American recorded 75 total tackles, while also leading the team with 5.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss. Additionally, Brown broke up eight passes, while also picking off one and forcing two fumbles. 

The ELF return of Anthony Mahoungou prior to the 2023 season was one of the biggest blockbuster signings in recent history. The Frenchman, who was an All-Star and ELF Champion with the Frankfurt Galaxy in 2021, joined their rival Rhein Fire and was back like he never left. Despite only playing in ten games, Mahoungou caught 60 passes 11 touchdowns and 984 receiving yards, which ranked him second in the league. The former Purdue Boilermaker and Philadelphia Eagle once again ended the season on a high, winning the Championship Game and being selected as a First-Team All-Star.

 After being a Defensive Player of the Year runner-up in 2022, Alejandro Fernandez once again proved to be a difference maker on defense. The young edge rusher ranked second in the ELF with 11 sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss, while also forcing a fumble and picking off a pass. Deservingly, Fernandez was selected to the All-Star team for the second season in a row.

Evans Yeboah has been the most vital part of the Hamburg Sea Devils’ defense over the course of the last two seasons. The freak of nature recorded 40 total tackles, eight sacks, three pass breakups and two forced fumbles, while also leading the team with 14.5 tackles for loss. Despite the Sea Devils’ struggles, Yeboah was a dominant force and got selected as a First-Team All-Star.

Johannes Zirngibl was one of the best homegrown players in all of Europe. “JZ” was a key-contributor for a Munich Ravens defense that tended to struggle over the course of the season. The Bavarian always delivered, recording 47 total tackles and led the team with 5.5 sacks, 16 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles. It looks like the Ravens found a defensive cornerstone for many years to come.

Hiswill Awuah is one of the most underrated players in the European League of Football. The compact defensive tackle has been a key piece of a great Sea Devils’ defensive lines for three seasons now and did not disappoint in 2023. The 2021 DROY nominee recorded 33 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Awuah has developed into a leader on the team and one of the best run stoppers in the league.

Tomiwa Oyewo burst onto the scene in 2023, turning into a top-three running back in the ELF right away. His 1102 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns ranked the Irish second and first in the European League of Football respectively, making him one of the most exciting playmakers in all of Europe.
