Stuttgart Surge sign former NFL sixth-round pick Moritz Böhringer

Just when you thought the Stuttgart Surge already had one of the best wide receiver groups in the European League of Football, Jordan Neuman is adding the arguably best skill position player Germany has ever seen. Sixth-round wide receiver Moritz Böhringer will play for his old head coach in 2023.

Böhringer made his GFL debut in 2015 at the age of 21 and instantly showed what he is capable of. With 59 catches for 1232 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns, the Stuttgart native won the league’s Rookie of the Year award. His impressive first season sparked interest among NFL scouts but since he was still too young to sign as a free agent, Böhringer had to go through the NFL Draft process. He was not invited to the NFL Combine but participated at the FAU pro day. That’s when the 1,93 m tall German took the football media all around the world by storm.

Making history in the NFL

On April 30th, 2016, “MoBo” made history. He was selected by the Minnesota Vikings with the 180th pick in the NFL Draft. This made Böhringer the first ever player without college experience to be drafted out of Europe. The first ever German NFL skill position player made the Vikings’ practice squad where he spent one season, before getting signed to the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad.  After two seasons with the Bengals, in which he Böhringer transitioned from wide receiver to tight end, the German got released.

He returned to Germany to finish his degree in mechanical engineering and signed with the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, where he played for two seasons winning the German Bowl and CEFL twice, before announcing his "retirement" at the age of 29 in December of 2022. Now, Böhringer is coming back to make his start in the best league in Europe.
