Rhein Fire vs. Nordic Storm: A crucial rematch this Sunday
Cara Iden

This upcoming weekend, Rhein Fire and Nordic Storm will face each other for the second time in eight days and the third time this season. After Nordic Storm won the first matchup in Copenhagen, Rhein Fire secured a home victory last weekend. While Nordic Storm won nine of their first ten games, last weekend's result had little impact, as it was already clear before the match that they would meet Rhein Fire again in the first round of the playoffs. A direct qualification for the semifinals was already impossible due to previous wins by the Vienna Vikings and Munich Ravens.
Let's first take a look at the statistics of both teams.

Back-to-back champions gaining momentum
Although Rhein Fire are the back-to-back defending champions and could claim a third consecutive title this year, the team had to replace two key players from last season. 2023 MVP Jadrian Clark and 2024 MVP Glen Toonga, together with former quarterback coach John Shoop, moved from Dusseldorf to the new franchise Nordic Storm. As a result, former quarterback Clark, who played a major role in the first two championships, could end Rhein Fire’s hopes of a third consecutive title this Sunday.
After a slow start to the season, the defending champions' offense has gained momentum in recent weeks. Rhein Fire averages 29 points per game, ranking 11th in the league. Their game relies more on passing – with 214.8 passing yards per game (8th in the league) – than on running, with 126.8 rushing yards per game (11th). This improvement should give the team and its fans hope. QB Chad Jeffries has a strong target in homegrown receiver Harlan Kwofie, and the backfield is strengthened by Jonathan Scott. Together, this trio has scored 13 touchdowns in the past three games – particularly impressive, considering that the defense generally ranks higher than the offense.
Rhein Fire's defense allows an average of 17.8 points per game, ranking fourth in the league. They allow 177.3 passing yards per game (3rd) and 139.3 rushing yards (10th).

Nordic Storm rely on Clark's arm
Nordic Storm's defense is also impressive. Allowing 16.8 points per game, they rank third in the league, just one spot ahead of Rhein Fire. On average, they allow 178.9 passing yards (4th) and 101.9 rushing yards (4th).
Their offense is strong as well, focusing heavily on the passing game, as running back Glen Toonga suffered an injury in the first game of the season – a setback Nordic Storm struggled to overcome. Replacing the 2024 MVP is a difficult task. Toonga, however, remains with the team and supports them on the sidelines in every game.
Led by quarterback Jadrian Clark, Nordic Storm’s offense records an average of 33.1 points per game, placing them 7th in the league. They gain 310.9 passing yards per game (2nd), while their ground game generates just 106.1 yards (13th). Clark often connects with American wide receiver Brendan Beaulieu and Spanish tight end Adria Botella Moreno, though the three have combined for only five touchdowns over the last three games.
Rhein Fire at Nordic Storm: Outcome uncertain
Recent results, more than anything else, make Rhein Fire look like the team to beat. However, Nordic Storm, winners of the North Division, will have the benefit of playing at home.
Ultimately, on Sunday, statistics will matter less than points on the scoreboard. One thing is certain: both teams will leave everything on the field to take the win from this special clash.
