Rhein Fire started the 2025 season of the European League of Football with a historic opportunity. For the first time ever, a team can achieve the “three-peat,” meaning three championship game victories in a row. But this dream is in danger of falling apart.

Following the departure of numerous key players, including MVP Glen Toonga and Championship Game MVP Jadrian Clark, the German team is undergoing a period of transition. The franchise has had to find its feet again, which is also reflected in its results.

With their 18-35 defeat against the Raiders Tirol in Week 8, Rhein Fire slips to a 4-3 record. This means second place in the North Division, but no place in the playoffs.

"We didn't finish the job. We did some things well, but not well enough. That's my responsibility," said head coach Richard Kent, on the defeat against Raiders Tirol. He added: “When the game was close, we had opportunities that we could have taken advantage of. We need to analyze that for next week, be self-critical, and move on from there.”

Week 9 will be a real challenge: Rhein Fire will face the still undefeated Nordic Storm. The reigning champions could use a win against the ambitious league newcomers, both for the record and for morale. Being the first team to beat Nordic Storm could give the team new confidence and keep their playoff hopes alive.
