One of the league’s best quarterbacks has chosen to come back to the ELF and return to the Austrian capital, in 29-year old passer Ben Holmes. 

Holmes led the Vienna Vikings to a 13-1 record as Vienna flirted with a perfect season before falling to the Rhein Fire in the championship game last weekend. Holmes, in his first year in Europe was one of the league’s brightest new stars, orchestrating an exciting season Vikings fans will not forget anytime soon.

“Since day one everybody's been welcoming with open arms. As the season went on I got closer and closer with everybody. You might not remember the score of a game, but you’ll remember the relationships you build here.”

Family and Football

The Tarleton State University (NCAA DI) alum, knows that Vienna, Austria is a special place where football is family. 

“Well, going into the season this was going to be my last year. I was going to retire. But I think once I saw myself playing at a high level, and then seeing my family enjoy watching me play and be in the stands, as well as thenexploring the city together and stuff like that. We grew as a family as well.”

The former USFL and CFL quarterback threw for 2,6043 yards and 34 touchdowns in 9 regular season games, controlling the ball and only tossing five interceptions. 

The veteran pro passer perhaps saved his best play for the playoffs amassing nine total touchdowns in two games. Now he feels as though he has unfinished business in the Austrian capital.

“I love what we got going on here”

Holmes knows that having the quarterback position be a stable foundation is the key to the Vikings making another run at the championship in 2025. 

“The family atmosphere is a huge reason for why I'm coming back. I'm trying to get our core group of guys back for next year, and it all starts with your quarterback. I love what we got going on here, I'm coming back.”
