Nordic Storm: "Creating a strong football culture in Denmark/Sweden"

One of the most exciting parts of the European League of Football’s championship weekend happened off the field. The league announced that a new team called the “Nordic Storm” will join next season.

The Nordic Storm will represent Copenhagen Denmark and Malmö Sweden as these two iconic cities are connected by a 7,845 meter bridge. The Storm will be the league’s 18th team. Storm board member and former ELF and Copenhagen Towers quarterback Randy Schroeder spoke with us on the weekend’s announcement.

“First and foremost, the weekend was a great showcase of what American football in Europe has become. To be announced during the festivities was an amazing experience. It was a culmination of a lot of hard work and a great weekend!

Two countries, two cities, one homegrown base

The Nordic Storm aim to put together some of the best talent in Denmark and Sweden in order to compete in the ELF. The league’s newest expansion team will be able to feature homegrown players from two countries.

“We are going to put together the most competitive football team possible. We are thrilled about having access to both Danish and Swedish homegrowns. We are excited about our coaches, players, and staff that will make the inaugural 2025 season something to remember!” - Schroeder

American Football in Copenhagen/Malmö

The Nordic Storm believe that bringing the ELF to Sweden and Denmark could be a stepping stone for growing the game in these countries and Scandanavia as a whole. The Copenhagen/Malmö region has just over 1 million inhabitants and has a strong sporting history of supporting soccer and ice hockey.

On the football field, the Copenhagen Towers have been a powerhouse in the Danish League since being founded in 1990. Now the Nordic Storm looks to use that success and take it to an international level.

“The Copenhagen/Malmö region already has a rich culture of American football. From a practical standpoint, the proximity to the rest of the ELF teams makes this a more than viable project. On a larger scale, the countries of Denmark and Sweden have consistently produced great football players which is a positive for the product we want to put on the field every week. The fans will have a great team to support.” - Schroeder

Bringing the talent home

We’ve seen several Danish and Swedish talents be impact players in the ELF over the course of the last four seasons. Whether it was All-Star center Joachim Christensen, receiver Theo Landstrom, or linebacker Ludwig Myren. There is no shortage of talent up north. Look for the Nordic Storm to bring several of these skilled Scandanavians home and build their team for 2025.

“This will help propel football into the future in both Denmark and Sweden. It will grow the popularity of the sport in the region and ultimately encourage more people to try the sport. This will create a strong football culture in the region for years to come.”
