"It was the right time", explained Val Gunn about his new coaching job in Switzerland with the Mercenaries in the ELF Live Show. In mid-April, Gunn was presented as the new head football coach of the new franchise Helvetic Mercenaries, which took over Switzerland for the Helvetic Guards. An ownership and management change resulted in a special situation. Val Gunn, known for his coaching tenure with the Istanbul Rams, was contacted from the new management to take over.

Starting a new run

The now 57-year-old seems optimistic about the new challenge waiting in the alps. "The approach has improved, and I am confident we can get there. I do feel like [...] we are basically starting a new franchise."

From pressure to underdog mentality

After his time with the Istanbul Rams, Gunn has gained a deep understanding of the underdog spirit that he and his team aim to embrace. "We are hoping that we can build from week to week." With over 25 years of coaching experience in Europe, Gunn is recognized for his direct connection to players. Reflecting on developments in Switzerland, he notes, "Things that weren't there last year [in Switzerland], are there now," referring to enhanced practice facilities and infrastructure.

Experience meets excitement

"I am excited for the league to start in May." It's a positive situation for Val Gunn, with the core of the Mercenaries' roster intact. Exciting times lie ahead in Switzerland, as one of the league's most experienced coaching-veterans eagerly anticipates week one and a home game against the Barcelona Dragons.
