The European League of Football (ELF) was founded in 2020 as a professional American football league. Inspired by the success of the defunct NFL Europe, the ELF aimed to provide a competitive platform for European and international talent while engaging fans with high-quality games. The league debuted its inaugural season in 2021 with eight teams from Germany, Poland, and Spain. It is important to know that the ELF adopted a franchise model, blending professional management with a commitment to developing grassroots football, setting itself apart from amateur leagues in Europe.
Since its founding, the ELF has expanded significantly, growing its team roster and geographical footprint. By 2024, the league featured 17 teams from 10 countries, including Italy, Switzerland, and Austria, emphasizing its pan-European vision. The league has also become a breeding ground for European talent, with some players earning opportunities in the CFL or even the NFL in the United States.
