Just days before the 2025 European League of Football season begins, one of Europe’s top defensive players has returned to familiar ground. Austrian linebacker Lucky Ogbevoen, who played in the CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2024, has signed with the Vienna Vikings.
The 24-year-old brings both experience and athleticism to the Vikings' defense. Ogbevoen is well known in Vienna, where his football journey began. He played in the club’s youth program, graduated from the Vienna Vikings Academy, and made his debut with the men's team at just 16 years old. Since then, he has developed into one of the most dynamic defenders in Europe.
A player with proven talent
After starting his ELF career with the Stuttgart Surge in 2021, Ogbevoen played for the Raiders Tirol in 2022 and 2023. His strong performance earned him a chance in North America, where he joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League. Now, he returns to the ELF – and his hometown – with high expectations. Known for his versatility, he can rush the quarterback, defend the run, or drop back in coverage. Head Coach Chris Calaycay calls him “one of the top 5 dynamic defensive players in Europe.”
With the pre-season coming to an end, all eyes now turn to Week 1. The Vienna Vikings will begin their campaign on May 18, traveling to face the Prague Lions.
The return of Lucky Ogbevoen is a major boost – not just for the Vikings, but for fans of high-level football across the league.
