Longtime coach Max Kössler returns to Vienna
Big homecoming in Vienna! Max Kössler has been part of the Vikings for nearly 20 seasons, holding several positions during his time in Vienna. Now the homegrown coach returns to the Austrian capital after two seasons abroad. In the upcoming season, Kössler will be in charge of the wide receivers.
"I am excited to be back where my coaching journey began 17 years ago", Kössler says. He adds: "This place holds many great memories, and I look forward to creating even more as we embark on another championship run. It’s an honor to return
and continue the journey here, where it all started."
After joining the Vikings organization as a player back in 2007, Kössler worked his way up to become one of the best wide receiver coaches in Europe. Since 2019, the Austrian coach is orchestrating the Vikings offense and now gets the opportunity to be part of the coaching staff in their inaugural season in the European League of Football.
Kössler, however, spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator of the Paris Musketeers, helping them make the semifinals against his former team last season. Kössler led an exciting offense featuring MVP candidate Zachary Edwards and All-Star WR Austin Mitchell. Overall, the Musketeers finished third in total yards and 6th in scoring in the ELF, all while playing in a tough western conference.
Vikings Head coach Chirs Calaycay is also very excited about the reunion: "Building a staff is the first step to our season, and adding Coach Kössler is such a huge signing. Max is the premiere WR coach on the continent. Being able to have him, his knowledge and experience back on our staff is a blessing. Having talent is one thing, but to get this 2025 Receiving Corps to perform to their potential is entrusted to one of the best coaches out there.“
