Jim Tomsula will not return as Fire Head Coach in 2025

Rhein Fire has officially announced that Jim Tomsula will not return as head coach for the remainder of the 2025 European League of Football season. The decision follows weeks of uncertainty and comes as the franchise looks to stabilize its path forward after two recent losses.
Personal reasons take priority
Tomsula, who led Rhein Fire to the ELF Championship in 2023 and 2024, has returned to the United States to care for family members dealing with health issues. “This is the result of a process that developed over the past weeks and months,” said General Manager Max Paatz. “Jim is taking care of his family in the U.S., where there are some serious health situations. After many years in professional football, it was important for him to be there for his loved ones. He has always been open and clear about that.”

Interim coach continues to lead
To ensure full focus on the current season, Rhein Fire and Tomsula mutually agreed to bring clarity to the situation. Richard Kent will continue as head coach — a role he had already taken on during preseason preparations. “Our goal is to keep the ship on course and push forward,” said Kent, who brings stability and leadership during a transitional period for the team.

Rhein Fire has left the door open for future conversations with Tomsula, emphasizing the respect and appreciation the organization holds for his contributions. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on how the team responds under Kent’s leadership.
