The European League of Football has brought on board an experienced sports executive and financial expert in Ingo Schiller. In this interview, the new Co-CEO and Chief Financial Officer talks about his first steps, the unique aspects of running an international league with 16 teams, and what has impressed him most about the ELF.

Mr. Schiller, what was your first thought when the ELF shareholders approached you about taking on a leadership role in the league?

At first, I was curious, and then I quickly became excited. What founders Zeljko Karajica and Patrick Esume, together with their team, have built in just five years is truly impressive - a continental league with 16 franchises from nine countries, strong partners, worldwide TV distribution, and a growing fan base. This has enormous potential, and for me, it’s both an exciting and attractive challenge to take on responsibility within the ELF and bring my expertise to the table.

The league is young and growing fast. That also brings risks and draws criticism. How do you assess that?

Our big goal is to stabilize the ELF and position it for long-term, sustainable success. This is not a sprint - it’s a marathon. In a young organization, it’s perfectly normal that there are challenges here and there. What matters is addressing issues openly, working together on solutions, and building solid, long-term structures. The foundations are in place; now it’s about developing them wisely and collectively. I approach this with an open mind and without preconceptions.

What is at the top of your agenda right now?

For me, it’s clear: before you can shape something, you need to understand it. That’s why, in the coming weeks, I’ll be having many conversations - both internally and with franchise representatives. I will primarily listen to get a real sense of what’s already working well at the individual locations and where there’s still room for improvement. Every franchise has its own reality - I know this well from my time on the supervisory board of the German Football League, with its 36 clubs, each with different needs and priorities. I’m looking forward to these exchanges.

After more than 30 years in professional football, what made you decide to switch sports - and what excites you about American football?

Football will always be a big part of my professional life. But for me, the question was: where can I apply my experience in a way that truly makes a difference? And generally, it’s wise to step out of your comfort zone and take on a new challenge. American football fascinates me with its strategic depth and versatility. On one hand, it’s powerful and physical; on the other, it’s like chess on grass. That combination is incredibly exciting.

Will you also visit teams on site to get a better understanding?

Absolutely. I will use the remaining matchdays to visit as many teams as possible and experience firsthand how this league operates. Personal contact is extremely important, especially during this growth phase. Only by being there in person can you understand the challenges - and also where the spirit that defines the ELF comes from.

How would you describe your leadership style?

Listen, structure, decide. I’m not someone who leads by raising my voice, but I do take responsibility and act decisively. I look forward to constructive - and certainly also controversial - discussions, and to gaining new perspectives. If we can get everyone pulling in the same direction, the ELF has a bright future ahead. I’m excited to play my part in making that happen.
