Homegrowns of the Week: Unlikely hero and MVP of the Week
Week 6 of the European League of Football season offered some historic performances by homegrown players.
Nico Strahmann had the game of his life on Saturday night in Milano. The 24-year-old Galaxy wide receiver caught nine passes for 175 yards and four touchdowns, setting new career-highs in all three categories and carrying his team to a 40-33 victory on the road. His outstanding performance made him just the fifth homegrown to ever win the MVP of the Week award.
Even though the Milano Seamen could not come up with the W against the Galaxy, Kevin Khay had an outstanding performance against the 2021 champions. With a team-leading nine tackles, one sack and four tackles for loss, the Italian linebacker did everything he could to stop the Galaxy offense.
Nils Jonkmans was the Helvetic Guards’ unlikely hero in Sunday’s upset win over the Barcelona Dragons. The Swiss kicker was perfect in regulation, scoring 1/1 on PATs and 4/4 field goals, including a 57-yard bomb, the third longest field goal in league history. Thanks to his fifth made field goal in overtime, the 31-year-old tied Phillip Friis Andersen’s single-game scoring record of 16 points and played a massive role in the first win in franchise history.
Nicolai Schumann was Mr. Reliable for Slade Jarman and the Berlin Thunder this weekend. The two-time European League of Football All-Star played the best game of his Thunder career, catching six passes for 73 yards and three touchdowns against the Fehérvár Enthroners.
Harlan Kwofie is making his second appearance in four weeks on this list. The German wide receiver was his team’s leading pass catcher last weekend, recording five catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Kwofie has established himself as a reliable playmaker besides Nathaniel Robitaille and Anthony Mahoungou and is ranking in the top-15 in receiving yards at the moment.
Sasan Jelvani has been a stud for the Stuttgart Surge defense so far. The linebacker ranks second on the team in tackles just behind former college standout and NFL player Khaylan Kearse-Thomas and leads the team in sacks and tackles for loss. After a season best 12 tackles, 2,5 TFL and two sacks, Jelvani is establishing himself as one of the best linebackers in the league.
After a good game against the Hamburg Sea Devils in Week 5, Paris Musketeers wide receiver Florian Larose is continuing to raise some eyebrows among fans and scouts. The 24-year-old is seemingly getting better from week to week and led the French team with 10 receptions for 136 yards and one touchdown this week. Larose is now tied with former All-Stars Adrià Botella Moreno and Kyle Sweet for a team-best three touchdowns on the season.
