Tim Hanswillemenke

Over the past few days, Berlin hosted an exceptional officiating clinic led by Walt Anderson, one of the most seasoned officials in NFL history. With a distinguished career that spans over two decades, Anderson brought a wealth of knowledge to Europe’s top football referees. His tenure in the NFL includes officiating Super Bowl XXXV as a line judge and serving as the referee for Super Bowl XLV. From 2020 to 2024, he held the role of Senior Vice President of Officiating Training & Development, and he currently works as an NFL Officiating & Rules Analyst.
Supporting the growth of football in Europe
This clinic is part of the NFL’s broader initiative to foster the development of American football around the globe. Aimed primarily at elite European officials, including those working in the European League of Football, the event focuses on aligning European officiating practices with NFL standards. The clinic will feature in-depth discussions on foul identification, grading systems, rule changes—especially recent kickoff modifications—and communication protocols both on the field and in the replay booth.
Behind the scenes of NFL officiating
Participants gained unique insights into the inner workings of NFL officiating, including what a typical week looks like for an NFL official. Anderson also shared personal experiences from his time on the field during Super Bowls, offered best practices for collaborating with broadcast teams, and led sessions on reporting and announcing fouls with clarity and authority.
This rare opportunity to learn directly from a legendary NFL figure underscores the league’s commitment to raising the standard of officiating in Europe.
