The Fehérvár Enthroners will start their first European League of Football season in less than two weeks. With 15 players of the Hungarian national team, the Enthroners have a solid base of homegrown players to rely on. But still, teams need to have exceptional playmakers in this league to be successful.

Multi-Sports athlete = Playmaker?

“I am very excited to apart of the European League of Football this year,” Enthroners American wide receiver Jay Griffin IV comments in an interview. “I am proud to represent the Enthroners and look forward to doing great things with the team.”

Griffin IV could be the playmaker each team is looking for on offense. With his track background, the 24-year-old brings a lot of athletic tools the Hungarian team can rely on. In his three years at New Mexico State from 2018 to 2020, Griffin IV caught 63 passes for 679 yards and four touchdowns while adding 137 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown on the ground.

Taking the next step

Just like many other American players in the European League of Football, Griffin IV believes that this league is a valid steppingstone. “I believe that playing in this league is a huge steppingstone for leagues in the U.S. because of the level of competition around each of the teams,” Griffin IV elaborates in an interview.

Other American players like former Cologne Centurions running back Madre London (USFL – Pittsburgh Maulers), former Barcelona Dragons defensive back Brandon Brooks (USFL – Houston Gamblers) or former Tirol Raiders Jalen Embry (CFL – Montreal Alouettes) were signed by leagues in North America after putting their best foot forward in the European League of Football.

Even European players like former Stuttgart Surge defensive back Marcel Dabo (NFL – Indianapolis Colts) and former Berlin Thunder defensive end Adedayo Odeleye (NFL – Houston Texans) already used the European League of Football as a steppingstone for the NFL IPP Program.

Nevertheless, the young wide receiver has its focus on the upcoming season with the Enthroners. “Right now, I am focused on winning a championship here and will see what happens at the end of the season.”  

New QB1 in Fehérvár ‍

After releasing former Leipzig Kings quarterback Gabriel Cunningham at the end of April, the Enthroners quickly found a new starting quarterback for the 2023 season: Jerod Evans. The former Virginia Tech quarterback will play for the Enthroners in 2023 and could be one of the best quarterbacks in the entire league. “I believe that Jerod [Evans] is one of the best quarterbacks in the league”, his teammate Griffin IV comments in an interview. “He brings a lot of experience and leadership that I believe helps our team a lot. I am looking forward to seeing what he can do with the weapons we have at our skill positions.”

Next to Griffin IV, the Enthroners also have former Barcelona Dragons wide receiver Benjamin Plu and homegrown wide receivers Nándor Tóth and Laszlo Benedek. It remains to be seen if this combination of playmakers and their new quarterback is set up for success. But Griffin IV is determined to give it his all this season to hopefully realize his dream of playing professional football in his home country.
