The Berlin Thunder continue to prepare for the 2026 season and have made a major move on the sidelines. Former NFL wide receiver Phil McGeoghan has been announced as the team’s new Head Coach. McGeoghan, who played for the Denver Broncos, New York Jets, and New Orleans Saints before injuries ended his playing career, brings extensive coaching and professional experience to the German capital.

A coach with NFL and college experience

After his playing career, McGeoghan transitioned into coaching and built an impressive résumé over the years. He has worked at several college programs, including Maine, Navy, South Florida, East Carolina, and Colorado, developing young offensive talent across different levels of football.

In the NFL, McGeoghan coached wide receivers for the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and Los Angeles Chargers. Most recently, he served as offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Battlehawks in the United Football League (UFL), where he helped one of the league’s most explosive offenses take shape.

A familiar face returns to Berlin

For McGeoghan, this new role marks a homecoming of sorts. Over two decades ago, in 2002, he played for the Berlin Thunder in the former NFL Europe, helping the franchise capture the World Bowl Championship that same year. Returning now as head coach, he aims to lead the Thunder back to success in the ELF and revive the proud football tradition of Berlin.

With Rookie of the Year Tyler Foster and Offensive Rookie of the Year nominee Chrisman Kyei already confirmed for 2026, McGeoghan will have promising young playmakers at his disposal. As roster building continues, Berlin fans can look forward to seeing how the former NFL coach shapes the next chapter of Thunder football.
