Current playoff scenarios - Who is and who is out?

There are only two weeks left in the European League of Football regular season and the race for the post-season is heating up. These are the scenarios for the last remaining playoff spot.

With the Vienna Vikings, Hamburg Sea Devils and Barcelona Dragons clinching their conference’s top spot, there is only one more playoff seed up for grabs. And currently four different teams are fighting for it. Right now, the Raiders Tirol are in front of the pack, sitting at (7-3). Right behind them the Frankfurt Galaxy, Berlin Thunder, and Rhein Fire (all at 6-4) are still in the hunt. Who will make it to the post-season? Here are the scenarios.

Raiders Tirol

The Raiders are in the driver’s seat. If Tirol wins both games, they are in the playoffs. In case none of the other contenders wins all of their games, the Raiders are almost guaranteed a playoff spot because of their outstanding point differential. The Raiders could get in trouble, when they lose to the Galaxy by more than six points, though. In that case every other team could slip in front of them under certain complex circumstances.

Frankfurt Galaxy

Frankfurt Galaxy are in the playoffs, if they win both games, beating the Raiders by more than six points and Berlin and Rhein Fire only win 1 of their games. If Rhein Fire and Berlin win both their games, Galaxy needs to have the better point differential. But in every case Frankfurt has to beat the Raiders by more than six points, in order to still have a shot.

Berlin Thunder

The Berlin Thunder need to win both of their games in almost any scenario. The only ways the Thunder can reach the playoff with only one win out of the next two games is

a) if Rhein Fire also only wins one game, Frankfurt beats Tirol by at least 6 points and looses to Stuttgart and the Thunder have the better point differential than Galaxy and Rhein Fire or

b) if Rhein Fire loose booth their games, Frankfurt beats Tirol by at least six points and loses to Stuttgart and the Thunder have a better point differential than Galaxy.

If the Thunder manage to win both of their remaining games, they need to have a better point differential than any other team with the same record.

Rhein Fire

After their win last week, Rhein Fire is still in position to make it to the playoffs. But for that they have to win every game and have a better point differential than any other team that has the same record, unless Galaxy is the only other team with the same record.

In that case Rhein Fire would progress to the playoffs because of their head-to-head record. The only way for Jim Tomsula’s team to make the playoffs without two wins is if Berlin wins against the Raiders and Galaxy wins by at least six points against the Raiders but lose to Stuttgart. In that case Rhein Fire could advance if they have a better point differential than Galaxy and Thunder.
