The Stuttgart Surge have signed their fourth and final American for the 2023 European League of Football season. With Mitch Fettig the Stuttgart Surge get a talented defensive back with plenty of Division I experience.

Three sport athlete and local hero

Fettig attended Olympia High School in Washington. Besides playing defensive back, wide receiver and running back for the Bears' football team, the Washington native was also a letterman for the school’s track and basketball team. But it was the gridiron, where “Dash” stood out the most. He made multiple All-State teams his senior year and committed to Division I FCS Eastern Washington University. After redshirting his freshman season, Fettig earned EWU’s Freshman of the Year award in 2015. He became a starter at the safety position and started eight out of nine games for the Eagles that year.

Safety with a leading attitude

The talented safety started all 14 games in 2016, ranking third in total tackles with 97. The All-Big Sky honorable mention also had four interceptions and five pass breakups. Fettig had a similar amount of success during his redshirt junior season. With 92 tackles and multiple pass deflections, earning him a third team All-Big Sky selection. The safety was serving as a co-captain on defense for his senior season, in which he started nine games. He ended his collegiate career with a major in criminal justice, 282 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and six interceptions.

He was signed to the Calgary Stampeders roster in 2020, but the CFL season got cancelled due to COVID-19. Fettig signed with Jordan Neuman’s Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns in 2022, where he had 39 tackles, one tackle for loss and two interceptions.

Now, he will join forces with his former head coach, with whom he won the German Bowl and the CEFL Bowl, in Stuttgart.
