Joshua "Mack Attack" making the Cologne Centurions more versatile

The Cologne Centurions are without a win over the past six weeks. But for now, the playoffs of the European League of Football are not out of reach completely.

This did not go as expected for the Cologne Centurions. Two wins against the Istanbul Rams and Raiders Tirol did not set the tone for a season that went downhill from there. Injury issues, one dimensional game plans, and a lack of production in the running game harmed a talented roster.

Ahead of the signing of Joshua Mack, aka “Mack Attack”, the Centurions best running back was homegrown talent Dean Tanwani with just 172 yards and a touchdown after six games. Joshua Mack was handed the number 28 with his signing, the number that was carried by Madre London last season. An omen?

Gamechanger in the run game?

Despite losing against the Berlin Thunder, Joshua Mack showed what he was made off. 108 net yards rushing and 44 yards receiving, and totalling for three total touchdowns in his first game ever for the German franchise. Therefore, the Centurions add one weapon to their offense that is capable of making plays in all situations.

A running back that can be used on passing downs either as a threat or blocking back was missing for the Centurions, making room for his receivers. Not without a reason, the receiving squad consisting of Roediger, Loercks, Geyer, Lenhardt and Pounds hauled in more than 200 yards total. This squad, with or without starting quarterback Jan Weinreich can win games.

Out of the blue into the best league of Europe

Mack, who was a standout for Liberty Flames at Division I FBS level, just joined from the first German division. Mack's overall statistics include 767 runs for 4,038 yards and 29 touchdowns and 64 catches for 595 yards and 2 touchdowns over his time at college. Among various other accolades he has received throughout his career, he was a 2017 First Team All-America and Walter Payton Award finalist. With Liberty, he has been able to win Bowl Games in all three seasons he played in.

A weapon the Cologne Centurions use out of their backfield as a screen pass receiver who also showed his strengths, especially in the open field, to leave opponents left in the dust. Mack seems to be blossoming in the European League of Football, having found a new home in Cologne. The playoffs remain the goal even in a strong South Conference.
