Ceesay vs. Maack – A quarterback controversy in Hamburg?

Sea Devils offensive coordinator Philipp Schulz: “We don’t have a controversy at the [quarterback] position”

For a couple of weeks now, the Hamburg Sea Devils are following an interesting strategy on offense by playing two quarterbacks in an almost 50-50 split.

In Week 12 against the 6-4 Berlin Thunder, German ‘starting’ quarterback Salieu Ceesay had 9 passing attempts for just under 100 yards and two passing touchdowns compared to 13 passing attempts by Moritz Maack with just over 100 yards and two passing touchdowns as well.

Do the Sea Devils have a quarterback controversy right before the playoffs?

In an interview, Hamburg Sea Devils offensive coordinator Philipp Schulz stated that the Sea Devils have “the luxury to have two good quarterbacks on the roster. Both earned the right to play. But we don’t have a controversy at the position“.

Schulz added that the Sea Devils use the two quarterbacks to make it harder for defenses to prepare for their offense. “Their playing style is a little different and teams need to prepare for them both,” Schulz explained. “The greatest thing is that they push each other in practice but also root and support each other. They are team first guys and they cheer each other up, are eager to learn, and are always bringing great energy to practice.”

However, the Sea Devils offensive coordinator also noted that they like to “stick with the hot” guy when it counts. ”Both [quarterbacks] are legit starters, they both give our team the chance to win the game. [But] we like to stick to the hot guy. We see our quarterback situation as a double headed monster.“

OC Schulz: “Our goal was and always will be to have an efficient and simple offense“

When looking at the Sea Devils offense in general, one player immediately stands out: running back Glen Toonga. By leading the league in rushing yards (1210) and rushing touchdowns (17) this season, he clearly is the cornerstone of the Sea Devils attack.

But what about the two American wide receiver Jean Constant and Lamar Jordan III?

According to Schulz, both wide receivers will play a significant role when it comes to the playoffs. “Of course, our both import receivers are a big part of the game plan,” Schulz explained. ”But we are also trusting and relying on our german talent. You can’t be one dimensional and force it to certain players. I feel very comfortable with handing or throwing it to all our skill guys. It don’t matter if it’s a homegrown or an American player.“

It will be interesting to see how the Sea Devils offense will operate against the Panthers in Week 13 on Sunday!
