From randomly sending Instagram direct messages to being one of the high profile receivers in the European League of Football. For Willie Patterson, now wideout for the Madrid Bravos, it all started last year with the Rhein Fire. On ELF Live, Patterson joined hosts Silas Nacita and Nick Alfieri to talk about his journey to the ELF.

Waiting for a chance

"I was in the best shape of my life, waiting on a chance," Patterson explained, reaching out to Rhein Fire's offensive coordinator Andrew Weidinger over Instagram. Having contact to Isaiah Weed, now quarterback of the Centurions, or former Dragons' wide receiver Josh Johnston, he knew playing overseas could make sense for him. After a successful season with Rhein Fire, but missing the Championship Game in 2023, both sides decided to move on. "I don't know why they decided to not re-sign me," Patterson said regarding Weidinger's plug and play offense.

New football opportunity in Madrid

Hearing from teammates like Mahoungou that it is okay to seek new opportunities and with interest from several teams in the league, Patterson joined the Bravos. While jumping in for Nathaniel Robitaille halfway through the season, the 25-year-old US-American dominated the league alongside quarterback and reigning MVP Jadrian Clark.

Now, in former Vikings' quarterback Chris Helbig, he finds an experienced leader at his side. In Madrid, he discovered what he described as "an exceptional foundation for a new team," observing a strong roster of local talent complemented by a skilled coaching staff. Patterson is enthusiastic about the Bravos' debut season and this fresh start. "I aim to establish a lasting legacy here!"
