Stuttgart Surge: Same quarterback, same success?

The Stuttgart Surge can consider themselves lucky that quarterback Reilley Hennessey is returning for another season!

In the 2023 season with the Stuttgart Surge, Hennessey was among the best quarterbacks in the European League of Football when healthy. He completed 64 percent of his passes for 1,679 yards and 14 touchdowns and added six rushing touchdowns in just seven games. His remarkable performance earned him a spot among the Top 100 players of 2023 in the ELF, ranking seventh.

But will the Stuttgart Surge have the same success again in 2024 with the seasoned veteran?

"It’s a brand-new team essentially"

In the weekly ELF Live Show hosted by Nick Alfieri and former Helvetic Guards running back Silas Nacita, the 28-year-old commented on how the Stuttgart Surge are set up for the upcoming season. “The hardest part about a team is just creating and maintaining trust in everybody. And that's not done through words, it's done through actions,” Hennessey admitted. “And so that's what we're in the process of doing.  And hopefully we get to do that 12 times throughout the year to get everybody else to trust us. So, it's kind of that every year is that, that new process and every year it's a brand-new team essentially […].”

Getting the guys back together

Despite losing some players to other teams or retirement, the Surge will keep their offensive core together. With wide receivers like Louis Geyer, Yannick Mayr, and Darrell Stewart Jr. returning for their second year together as a trio, Hennessey has a lot to look forward to when it comes to Week 1 at the end of May.

From thoughts of retirement back to football?

After the loss to Rhein Fire in the 2023 Championship Game, the Canadian-born quarterback was thinking about retiring from football to shift the focus to his career outside of sports. But why did he decide to come back for another year of ELF football?

In a statement by the Stuttgart Surge, Hennessey explained it ultimately came down to the fans and the experiences he made in Stuttgart playing for the Surge. “After lots of consideration, the opportunity to play one more time for this team, one more time for the Surge fans, one more time with my brothers in blue and yellow was too hard to move on from. I am very excited to be back in BW and keeping Surge football at the top of Europe.“

Lucky for the Surge, they keep looking just as dangerous as last year when it comes to putting points on the board!
